Having a very active young male as your oldest child can sometimes prove to be a…. um….. challenge to mom who is an only child and tends to like…. quiet…..peace…

I’ve read all the books (really…. and there are a TON!) claiming the amazing academic success of homeschooled students, the simple, peaceful lifestyles while the children in the home work together, the outstanding delicacies made by the 4-year-old as soon as her mom ground her fresh flour (yes, that one I do—the flour part anyway), and, well….

BaHAhahahahah!!! Let me tell ya~ in our home, I could write my own book, and it would probably tell just a bit of a different story . Yes- this mom is a bit of a worrywart, constantly fearing missing a huge gap in education. And at times, our house is anything EXCEPT PEACEful. But…

On the more difficult days, I always think of my guy, Mr. Ty Pennington. (And seriously WHERE is that guy when you need him??) He was a little ‘hyper’ as a child, right? Even claiming the ADHD thing…

And look how his life turned out! So, I’m thinking that my eldest isn’t too much unlike him and it gives me hope Just look at those delegating taskmaster skills- he doesn’t even need a bull horn because his voice carries well enough (TRUST me!).

This go-cart was his ENTIRE idea- planned, cut parts with power tools (ugh!), and assembled all himself. (With a few squabbling sibling’s and a puppy’s help.)

But, the rewards were great!

And this mama’s proud!

I did give the disclaimer that any ER visit co-pays would come out of allowance, thus reducing Lickity Split trips. I think they heard me.

Just wait til you see his doghouse! Look-out Ty, I think you may have met your match?!

Because I just KNOW you’ve (esp. you Lauri! ha ha!) been losing sleep over the status of Cooper- rest assured, he’s alive and kicking. And ugly.

He’ survived the many many many miles to Florida and back while providing entertainment for 3 young ones~ did you know how thrilling it is to flick a tadpole’s cage and watch this creature (him?, her?, it?) jump??

As for the saying about some babies being only beautiful in their parent’s eyes…. let’s take it a step further… there is a reason some creatures eat their young. Frog legs anyone?

Introducing… Cooper

Thanks to a nifty little Learning Express Store, Lydia fell in love. With a frog. But not just any frog- instead one that needs nurtured from the beginning frogish cellular level. Oh goody! And so arrived the Styrofoam box on my porch yesterday. If I had been as excited as she was, I would have remembered to take a picture of that first container. It was pretty cute… as far as stryfoam goes.

And Cooper’s new home. Now, this special frog can’t just survive in any water source, but MUST have SPRING bottled water. But not just any spring water- bottled spring water that IS NOT distilled. Have you tried to find that lately?

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this water will work just fine…

And so we have it. Cooper’s new happy little home. Now for the best part??? He, oops- (Lydia tells me he’s a she!) SHE has to travel 1000 miles to Florida. Hee hee! Can you imagine how much Daddy is loved by the Grandparents right now?? Do you remember Monty I AND Monty II, the praying mantis from a few years back?

New Inspiration

Yes, it has been a long time. I pray you are all well! Since the Christmas season, we've been... busy ... just like everyone else :). I contemplated quitting the blog thing for good. Didn't feel like I had anything of importance to say and figured no one cared anyway. While that may still be true (on both occasions) I've realized that I miss adding little blogs here and there, and, for our family, it's been a great way to journal our lives. Since I will never ever scrapbook, (this time my 'never' REALLY does mean NEVER) it's time to get back to the updating. I figure this blog's pretty much for me anyway, all ya have to do is hit the delete button if you're not interested. :)

It's been an incredible year to date. Full of so many things on so many levels. Full of the personal turmoil that I think sometimes only mom's can know, and yet still, wonderfully, full of adventures. Short unexpected jaunts to Punta Cana, weekends with Bruce Springsteen, gala events in Nashville, and most importantly- priceless, lifetime memory-making with friends~ what could be better? Along with all of that, we are in a stepped-up, organizing, simplifying mode around here, but yet READY for more adventures!

The signs of spring have brought new inspiration on many levels. What's been going on with you guys? If it's dreary where you are, just THINK SPRING!! xoxo...

Less than 50 days…

This is probably not something you want to hear, but facts are facts. Like it or not, you have less than 50 days to get ready for the craziness~ that is, if you celebrate Christmas the way the world tells you you must. In our family, we’ve experienced all extremes of celebration- from doing basically ‘nothing’ because it “didn’t edify the ‘real’ reason of the season”, to over-indulgence, and quite frankly, hellacious days of child-spoiling. I’ll never forget the year the little ones had 4 straight days of WAY too many presents, sugar, tantrums, and TEARS. But that’s another blog post...

Now that we’ve gone from every end of the spectrum, we’re at a time of our lives when we just want to SIMPLIFY. Do the children REALLY need 100 gifts? Or, would they rather spend the entire season WITH you embracing each sight and sound in a peaceful, child-like-wonder setting? As a homeschooling family (with their DEFINITE share of worries, struggles, and getting REAL about things), one of the biggest advantages is the ability to fit education within OUR family’s timetables. Because we do a little school throughout the year, including summer, we can relax the schedule a bit throughout the Holiday’s to take time for the things that matter. (Disclaimer: YES, education matters. For those who aren’t following my heart, I’m talking about the education of LIFE here.) This year, we intend to ENJOY, SHARE, and EMBRACE life~ to find the wonder in our children’s eyes as we share in new traditions~ simply, warmly- together.

I came across this site a while ago from a local homeschooling group. Any tool and resource you may need for the season can be found here, in ~Organized Christmas~ . However you choose to celebrate in your family, maybe this site can help to make your Christmas season a little less ‘stressful’.

Now someday… this may be a way to totally simplify~ is there a more simple way than spending Christmas in the sun? Yes, we’re tempted, but somehow it just wouldn’t seem the same. (Really, Mark!) Now as for January…. February……. Mar…………. that would be a WHOLE different story. Or blog post...

And this is THE best sight ever—the eye-sore shed with human wheels as it EXITS! I find it funny that here in our small town, you can place an item such as this in your driveway with a ‘for sale’ sign, and have it sold 2 days later. NO complaints here!

It’s clear we live in a rat-race society and for whatever reason, we seem to have chosen that lifestyle in our home- for now anyway. Routine and normalcy seems to be a fleeting thought these days. I haven’t posted anything because it seems to be the same old thing around here- house, house, house. Which for you guys, probably translates to boring, boring, boring. I even contemplated a final post stating ‘this blog has been fun but is now done’. After finding a few moments (FINALLY) to reflect, I realized that while it seems like the same old thing, progress really has been made~ and for our few faithful family-members and friends, you might still like to be updated. And so then, here we are, back again

During our brief intermission of the Hollywood lifestyle (oh the things your friends can get you into~ and OH how I wish I could tell you all about the big movie filming in this small town, but because I signed my life away, can’t~) here’s what has been going on~

I’ll post many more pictures of the house later, but for now this one is THE proof. My actions have been justified! For all of you who think I’m just a neat-freak and a compulsive cleaner because I have to dust each and every day, and for all of you who think duct-cleaning companies are a scam--- THIS is what could be circulating in your house—this is the unedited, untouched, exactly as-is gunk inside our duct work. I’d say that after today’s furnace move and clean air-returns, we can declare a great victory to perpetual runny-morning noses!

On to the men’s ‘day-cave’--- Isn’t it AMAZING that this has been finished for less then 2 weeks, and there is no room for a vehicle???

Now that I’ve enticed you with the thrilling suspense of coming back to see what else has been going on around here, I’m going to leave ya hanging~ you can hardly wait, right?!

Coming from a family where each senior father has fought in, and made great sacrifice defending this country, I know we are living in a generation where sadly, our freedom and those who fought for it are taken for granted.

While it’s not the prettiest in roofing history, it will serve it’s purpose and allow us to be just another step closer to the end goal~ Which is why a commemorative flower must be placed in the center~ a symbol of finished projects, a symbol of wonderful friends (THANK YOU AGAIN JEFF!!!), a symbol a humor, a symbol of the awesome completed deck to come… WAY down the road :), and a symbol of a female touch.

I think Mark may see it as something else--- a symbol of his wife’s crazy ideas… (which is really a politically-blog-correct way of saying it’s getting deep in here… )

Carrie- there’s something you can do- redecorate your house in your mind after watching endless home improvement shows:)

I came across an encouraging article in our local Pittsburgh magazine- a breath of fresh air in today’s world, for sure! Secret Agent L has been anonymously stalking unknowing people with little deeds and acts of love around town, and her acts are spreading~ After receiving an anonymous little basket on my porch one day a few years ago, I firsthand know just how much a simple, little token can brighten your day. I married the man of my dreams ~ and yes, he had hair, and no, I did NOT cause it to fall out. I’ll leave that reason to our 4 ~~ornery~~ angelic children. The excuse for the fuzzy hair? 15 LONG (according to the children) years ago, they simply didn’t have the technology of anti-frizz styling products :)After 15 years you realize that a candle-lit shed in your torn-up, muddy back yard with a take-out from a restaurant rather than Subway, is just as romantic as the most expensive dinner out in town. Life is never perfect and it’s not the prize, but instead, the journey, that’s important~Here’s to 15 action-packed, adventurous years~

There really is never a dull moment here. Each day brings new adventures- or should I say machinery? Anything new is progress, right?

I think I’ll just focus on the roses for now- my little piece of heaven in the midst of chaos :) For Elisha- it doesn’t get any better than this. Even on Christmas Eve!

We’re predicting he’ll be the youngest owner of a construction company someday soon. Anyone want to invest?

Wait- I think we’ve already invested in our own local company-

And to our neighbors who’d like some quieter summer days- it will be over soon! We promise! (honestly.) But then that wouldn’t be very adventurous for this crew :) The projects just won’t involve anymore excavating—right guys!?! To be continued. All weekend :) And the next… and the next…. and the…

If you have visited all of the ‘usual’ attractions in Washington, D.C., and you’re looking for something just a bit different- check out The Old Post Office Pavilion~

Walking down the street, it towers above like an old cathedral.

Inside, it’s bright, airy, and BIG- full of skylights, food eateries, shops and entertainment. Did I mention Ben and Jerry’s? I believe I saw an advertisement for $3/3 scoops during the hours of 4pm-6pm nightly. Pretty awesome deal for B & J- just in case you needed to know :)

If waiting in line for the Washington Monument’s view of the city doesn’t excite you, you can ride 315 feet to the top of the Pavilion Clock Tower for 360 degree views of the city~ take a jacket if it’s windy!

Just in case my sweet husband is reading… see those really neat roof-top gardens…. those would be SWELL on our deck—right?!? Minus any little duckletts that happen to still be waddling around, of course :) Some many adventures, so little time (and money) !!!

When we arrived to DC, we discovered an inviting sign near our METRO stop. If you know me, you’ll understand how very enticing this was…

And of course, we had to check it out. Quite simply, we found just what the sign stated…

And we indulged. Now—these were yummy-looking little treats that we did have the choice to purchase. But— at $3 EACH, they weren’t quite that yummy. The most intriguing part--- the place was packed! The price for 1 dozen? $33. No kidding! And— while we were gobbling down every last expensive crumb, someone was placing an order for 3 dozen. Yes, I’m from a small town and may be a bit naive, but can you imagine spending $100 on your next party for… CUPCAKES??? Is there something I’m missing? Anyone want to go into business… :)

It’s always special to make memories with ones you love~ this past week was no exception~

With a quick jaunt to Washington, D.C., new treasures were waiting at every block. This has probably been here for a few years, but it was the first we’ve discovered it. The National Museum of the American Indian would make you think you were in the heart of the Southwest.

If I can’t make it to Arizona, this view is the next best thing :)

Hoping Easter was a refreshing time of celebration for you all! The children KNOW what any Holiday morning means—PICTURE time! And Elizabeth was… well, typical Elizabeth. She still hasn’t caught on that the sooner you smile ‘pretty’, the sooner the camera leaves :)

I thought I’d be super-mom and make their dresses this year. Don’t ask me how that went—WHAT was I thinking??! They may look fine here, but any seamstress would be gasping!

Most of my readers know that I was hoping to accompany Mark on a trip to London over the weekend. And most of you know that didn’t work out. It turned out to be a weekend spent waiting for flights and hoping, but not knowing, when a return to home-sweet-home would be. Other than missing my family terribly, I didn’t mind though. (As long as I found reasonable gate agents- is that really too much to ask?? Some of you really need to consider a career change!)

Why? Travel is just in my blood. Somehow, someday, I have to figure out the means to either profit monetarily from it, or the means to pay for more of it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated~ resort critic… food critic… hotel critic………….. :)

I just read this article on one of the travel blogs I follow (tripbase.com), that couldn’t describe me any better- It’s the exact same thoughts I have almost all of the time, and never put into words. Thank you tripbase.com for making me realize I’m not alone, while most people think I’m crazy :)

The realization has set in. It’s not going away anytime soon. This backhoe will not be completing our yard in a LOOONNG time. But I’m not complaining. Really.

What’s not going away? Why the snow, of course. This was before the 2nd storm hit, dumping another 6 inches on top of this. And this is also before the 3rd storm expected to hit tonight with another 6-8 inches or so.

Yes—I know I have friends living in the Midwest and these few flakes probably seem like a dusting to you. To you guys—all I can say is I’m not envious of your storms one bit! :)

Now to my western family. I should have known that when I laughed that you had more snow before us and it was warmer here than there, that we’d pay later. Never again will we make fun of your school cancellations over a 1/2 an inch— they have not had school here in 7 consecutive school days, and probably won’t for another 2 after that. You can imagine HOW much our little ones LOVE that they are homeschooled and don’t get to take advantage of quite so many days off —at least not now —hee hee :)

Well, I suppose we may as well enjoy it. Time for an igloo~

2. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of peace and quiet with a fresh new blanket~

3. Not everyone is happy about shoveling the driveway out~

4. Construction projects may be a long way until completion~

5. Electricity is not a thing to be taken for granted~

6. Some days call for multiple cups of hot cocoa~

7. Justification for stashed-away chocolate bars is a plus~

8. Just because your part of the street looks like you’ll be trapped forever, somewhere in the world it is warm enough to swim outside~

9. There is always someone in a worse condition than you~

10. Be thankful for all things~ especially for the fact that summer will again return one day :)

Just a tiny Christmas review in pictures~

It's been an adventurous few days for little ones--- and big ones too :)

I'm not TOO sure who did more work here, but nonetheless, Elisha's new backhoe/steam-roller thingy was finally created. And just 2 days after starting.... (you didn't have anything better to do anyway, did you PapPap???)

It's been days filled with family fun-- and playing with trains--- this display was created by my Dad during his fight with cancer---

I think it was one of Jacob's favorite 'events' of the day.

And what Christmas would be complete without making a big mess in Grandma's kitchen?? Play dough is ALWAYS good for that!

Just roll pretzel rods in some white chocolate-- add some mini chocolate chips for eyes and buttons--

Embellish with scarves made out of cut-up fruit roll ups~ Add hats made of gumdrops and gummy rings~ enjoy!

Hey Texas guys-- I have a confession to make~ (for any other readers, sorry to bore you)

Last year when your gifts arrived, we allowed the little ones to open them early. So, kids being kids--- they remembered- typical! And Dad being Dad, said, "OK-- that's fine!"

I figured since this impatient bunch (you know I couldn't possibly include myself in that statement!- LOL!) couldn't wait just a few more days, the least we could do is share their evening with you :)

And before I forget-- Lauri, your cookies are as yummy as I remember! THANK YOU!! Another confession-- I didn't share too many. My tight jeans thank you even more :) I'm telling you-- there HAS to be a secret ingredient!

Jacob's race car was a huge hit~ and provided for lots of non-bickering time with big brother as they raced together-- another plus for mom!

The gyrosphere thingy-- was great! For many reasons--- you should have seen the men trying to first put it together-- hee hehe-- at one point it flew across the kitchen-- who knew gyrospheres could fly??? :)

Now that Elisha has it figured out-- he can work it 'AWESOMELY!' He can even balance it on his nose-- picture to come later! As for the girls--- you KNOW these are hits!!! Except that Elizabeth has misplaced her dolls somewhere in her rat's nest upstairs-- you can imagine her face all day-- oh well, they'll turn up soon! :) OK-- we do NEED the inside scoop here--- but I'm figuring these are for that super-talented (or REALLY dumb) squirrel that Mark still thinks he can catch performing gymnastics simply by dangling an ear of corn from the tree. Am I right?? And the tea and chocolate--- That I may or may not share-- THANK YOU!!! Since this is a blog with just a few readers, I figured I'd attempt to make you a part of our distance Christmas with you :) We miss you, love you, and wish you a very very warm, sunny Christmas!! I must go walk off some cookies now...

The children were as excited as kids on Christmas morning when they awoke to the snow yesterday morning...

it was time to go sled-riding!

And--- in 'Elizabeth-style', she was quite proud to dump her PapPap right off her sled :)

My little snow angels didn't last very long in the cold... the first time... ...until the second-time around when they found friends with REAL hills :)

and even dogs!

and LOTS of fresh cookies and hot cocoa!

Buckie the DEER

The children had a fun weekend-- they didn't get to play with a puppy, but a deer that acted just like one-- meet Buckie the deer!

Short version of a long story: he lives on some acerage of a friend of a friends--- and was basically raised like a puppy~

Did you ever see a deer that played with children? The green t-shirt is an attempt to keep him safe from hunting season...

Wish I had the video available to show the this amazing deer-- never seen anything like it! He should be on America's Funniest Video's!

Happy post Thanksgiving from a slightly more serious gang ;)

I say slightly- because we're back to our school routine-- with the exception that the children know there are only 25 days left-- and they know there really is NO seriousness to be had as they belt out Jingle (or jinger as Elizabeth tells us) Bells for the 100th time. Who taught them how to read a calendar anyway?? Should've known better... sometimes ignorance can be bliss :)... along with blissful days from the past of setting the clock ahead an hour (or 2) because it's dark outside and telling them it's bed time... not that I would do that.... just typing out loud :) Silly person who taught them to tell time....

Cause that neat little back-hoe thingamajig that weighs 8,000 pounds is now stuck over the hill-- over the hill that from my window looks as if it drops off into never-never land. Really it did-- the picture doesn't do the panic-factor justice :) Below that little pile of dirt is a LONG way down!

Thankfully 4 hours later, we're back in business~

Yes- in just a few short 83 days, it will once again be Christmas Day :)

Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm one for structure, order, and cross-off lists with items to be completed. So much so, that my goal each year is to be DONE with Christmas prep (except for the actual decorating) by October. I'd much rather enjoy the sights and sounds of the season by playing with the family and heading out to our own family traditional activities without spending needless money, and without the stress of HAVING to buy last minute gifts, etc., etc., etc.

This year I'm late. I haven't even thought of gifts nor have I saved any money. (yes-- I REALLY can hear you all giggling at how crazy I must sound to be so particular-- LOL! :) ) There is a point here--- I just came across a site that will help you complete the Holiday items that might drive you crazy each year--- if you need some organizational help: check out OrganizedChristmas.com. They have a 6-week course to help get you ready and organized by the first week of December. If Christmas is a stressful time of year for you, maybe this can help you focus on what is really important and not on the things Christmas was NOT intended to be--- I intend to take full use of this site now that I feel so unprepared... :)

Yummy Maple Syrup Substitute

If you've done any research on sugar replacements in recipes, or just love your Sunday morning pancakes, you know that REAL maple syrup is a must! If you use the real stuff (if you don't- you don't know what you're missing!!), you know it can be a bit pricey (justifiably so-- we made if for years when I was a child, and there is A LOT of work and time involved!). So, unless you have connections to maple producers (such as Sweet Wood Maple) or connections to these producers via your Mom (thanks Michelle and Brian!!), here is a substitute that might help your pocket-book. It was taken out of Stevia Sweet Recipes by Jeffrey Goettemoeller.

Maple Apple Syrup

1/4 cup water

1 cup natural apple juice

1 T arrowroot or cornstarch

1 T butter, optional

1/4 t. Stevia Extract Powder (or a little less)

3/4 t. vanilla flavoring

3/4 t. maple flavoring

Stir together water, apple juice, and arrowroot powder. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce from heat and stir in remaining ingredients. Refrigerate leftovers in covered jar.

Enjoy!

First things first-- could someone PLEASE tell them this is TOO high!?! And yes-- we STILL LOVE Lowe's-- can't ya tell? Seriously contemplating a Lowe's plaque on the finished front shutter :)

Next matter of business-- they tell me things are coming along. "We'll have a yard soon-- REALLY honey-- we are making GREAT progress." ALL I seem to see is MORE dirt! And apparently one 'back-hoe digger thing' is now no longer enough. I guess it was sad and lonely because now we have 2 of these contraptions sitting around. Meet big-brother 'back-hoe digger thingamajig #2'. Isn't it great?? As that saying goes-- boys and their toys.... This one was worth it because it conquered THE STUMP. Mark was quite proud as you can tell :) If you should happen to need my husband this week-- you can find him ~~playing~~ working really hard in the backyard :)

The children have become accustomed to the increase of very slow-moving vehicles driving by as they check out the progress. So accustomed that without stopping what they're doing, they just yell "yup, still working!" to any curious onlooker. Someday soon, they won't be able to say that :)

Amidst the construction-- a discovery was made.

3 little kittens were found behind the make-shift shed. They all look quite healthy so we're assuming the mother is close by~

That being said, does anyone want some little creatures for a new pet? Hubby is WAY to allergic for keeping them in this house~ Come on-- you know you want one!! :) Look how cute!!

This is probably not very exciting to most- but for the little feet trying to complete school, it provided quite a distraction.

After determining from the experts that our HUGE oak tree was in fact gone, funeral arrangements were made. Who better to help? Shawn-boy to the rescue!

Meet Shawn. He is crazy. He tells us we might want to move the SUV, just in case. Note that the vehicle was parked right beside the house- but no worries!

Let's say a quick prayer for that 'just in case'

Really-- it's NO big deal to walk away from a tree that's notched out-- we've got all day~

Five minutes later-- no problem-- just where we wanted it to land :) Phew!

Friends have been asking us what we've been up to and I don't really have an answer other than-- just living summer life.

Leisure checker games with neighbor kids (in which Elizabeth is happy as long as she's winning)

New yard sale finds from big brother-- like this dinosaur costume Elisha thought Jacob would love~ And learning how to ride 2- wheel bikes 'all by myself daddy'!!

He's already gone 4 miles on the bike trail~ more than I can say for myself :)

Enjoy these hazy, lazy days while you can! We found acorns today and you know what that means...

is still being perfected. Thought ya might like an update of the progress. Let's start with Mr. Oak Tree-- (aka- the tree where the super-smart squirrels live-er, lived.)

We tried to save it, but it's not looking so swell-- and may have to dearly depart this beautiful back yard.

Yes- this beautiful yard... Still digging. And digging. Elisha is quite proficient in his skills. If only he were this enthused about spelling...

What's that fence looking thing back there? Lots of porch ceiling boards. Lots.

It's been quite a production around here. Why isn't Mom around? She's busy keeping everyone in line and getting them where they need to go--- yes- karate, karate, karate :)

Kefir Grains

If anyone is local and in need of kefir grains-- let me know-- mine are growing like crazy! If you don't know what kefir is-- it's like yogurt, only better for you. You can use a kefir mix which will last about 7 makings, or use kefir grains which will last forever. I got ours from kefirlady.com.

And so begins the sewing lessons... Thank goodness for the new world of the Internet! For sewing-challenged mom's like me, we found this great booklet with a accompanying devotional, called Catch the Sewing Bug. In it are little projects and beginning step-by-step skills~

Not sure when the next lesson will be, but I know someone will be waiting patiently :)

refreshing spa water

After recent visit to a relaxing spa, Mark and I were surprised how yummy simple things can quench your thirst. Served at the spa was this refreshing water with a hint of mint and cucumber~

You can easily make this yourself for a relaxing time-out at home. Simply fill a pretty pitcher with water, add some cucumber slices, lemon slices, and mint leaves~ allow to sit for a few hours, and suddenly water doesn't sound so boring~

Updated house pictures. It's coming along. We've now concluded this really is an Extreme Home Makeover-- in SS..LLL..OOO...WWW motion. Like 3 years slow :)

We are building shutters-- wood is painted and ready to be put together--

the bottom half of the house is ready for stone to be added.

Notice how Mark's hole in the upper window really stands out, adding some extra character?? :)
